The piece is inspired by a trip to Ghana. In the long drive from Accra to Akumadan I passed countless houses plastered with Vodaphone advertising with the tag line "power to you". I later found out that home owner were paid a small fee to paint and maintain the adverts on their own homes. Yes, this is innovative marketing from Vodaphone. My instinct was that this was vulgar. I'm still trying to objectively figure out why. After all, the owners we being paid and mobile technology is undeniably a net gain for rural Africa. It's a win / win, right? Despite these facts, the uneven gain of the big corporation leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Later on, I attended a weekly cattle market in a small community where, interestingly, real "power" comes to those who can acquire the most live stock. Though seemingly more noble, it is still "acquiring" and so this is not an anti-capitalism protest, it is a floored, unsustainable but best system we have, I guess I'm wondering out load how we can use it more responsibly.
